Who We Are

Sound Of Carnatic is a cultural initiative dedicated to celebrating, presenting, and sharing the rich world of South Indian classical music with audiences in the Netherlands and beyond. Our goal is to create meaningful spaces where tradition, learning, devotion, artistry, and community come together through music.

We believe Carnatic music is not only a performing art, but also a living tradition that carries history, discipline, creativity, and spiritual depth. Through concerts, curated cultural experiences, and learning opportunities, we aim to connect people of all backgrounds with this timeless musical heritage.

THE HEART OF THE TRADITION

What Is Carnatic Music?

Raga

A raga is the melodic soul of a composition. It shapes mood, color, and emotional depth, giving each piece its unique identity and expressive power.

Tala

Tala is the rhythmic framework of Carnatic music. It provides structure, precision, balance, and the dynamic pulse that supports melodic creativity.

Improvisation

One of the defining features of Carnatic music is improvisation—where musicians expand ragas and rhythms with imagination, training, and spontaneity.

Ragas We Cherish

Carnatic music is home to a vast and beautiful universe of ragas. Some feel meditative, some majestic, some playful, and some deeply devotional. Each raga carries its own character and emotional flavor.

  • Kalyani – majestic, expansive, luminous
  • Bhairavi – classical depth and emotional richness
  • Todi – profound, introspective, powerful
  • Hamsadhwani – bright, auspicious, energetic
  • Kambhoji – grand and expressive
  • Shankarabharanam – graceful, balanced, timeless
  • Abheri – sweet, moving, lyrical
